Popular American restaurant chain Denny’s Diner opened its first UK store in Swansea over Christmas, the first in what is expected to be a national roll out.

The diner is being run by Denny’s franchisee Magic Brands Group, owned by Leon Esfahani who has previously operated Starbucks and Pizzas Hut outlets under similar franchise agreements.

The Swansea opening is the first of ten locations expected to see a Denny’s Diner launch over the next several years.

Denny’s has 1,724 franchised, licensed, and company restaurants around the world including in Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Honduras, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and the Philippines.

The majority are located in the US where the family dining restaurant was first launched in 1953.

The diners, which in the US are predominantly situated near motorway exits and in service areas, are well known for their pancakes and bacon breakfasts.

The Swansea menu mostly replicates that of the US’ in addition to a few ‘British’ additions such as baked beans and fish and chips.

Darron Keinzley, brand manager for Denny’s Magic Diners UK, told Business News Wales: “Denny’s guests have come to our diners to sit back, relax and enjoy delicious, hearty meals for more than 60 years.

“We hope to bring that same sense of community to Swansea with this new restaurant. From breakfast any time to satisfying lunches and dinners, if hungry fans are in the mood for it, chances are we’re serving it.”

Denny’s Swansea opened in time to serve a number of Swansea’s homeless a warm meal on Christmas Day.

Writing on Denny’s UK Facebook page, Keinzley said: “It was an incredibly emotional day. For weeks our team has been working to get ready for our opening with support and training from our US colleagues who are with us to help. Many of our new team are just starting their first job and there’s a lot to learn.

“So many of our team volunteered to help those most in need as we opened especially to serve homeless people in Swansea with a hot meal and drink and to give them donations of warm clothes and hygiene essentials.”

Denny’s Diner Swansea is open from 7.30am to 11pm from Monday to Sunday.
