US-based restaurant chain Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop is set to purchase a fast-casual brand Wing Zone, which serves made-to-order chicken wings.

Founded in 1993 by Matt Friedman and Adam Scott, WingZone has 31 locations in North America with 36 internationally.

Capriotti CEO Ashley Morris remarked the deal as a natural fit for both brands and said that Capriotti’s and Wing Zone share many of the same internal values and organisational goals.

Morris said: “We look forward to leveraging our expertise in franchising, operational excellence, and technology with Wing Zone’s off-premise experience to help both brands continue to grow. We are thrilled to welcome Wing Zone into the Capriotti’s family and are excited about what lies ahead.”

As part of the deal, Morris will assume the role of Wing Zone CEO.

The acquisition follows Capriotti’s considerable growth and profitability during 2020.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the restaurant chain opened 18 new shops last year. It currently has 115 shops open with an additional 210 units under development.

In addition, Capriotti’s signed 24 multi-unit franchise agreements last year to launch a total of 106 new restaurants across the US. It also reported ‘best in class double-digit same-store sales increases’ throughout the year.

Capriotti’s said it expects to roll out more than 30 new restaurant units this year.

Morris said: “This year has presented a unique set of challenges for restaurants nationwide and Capriotti’s was no exception. I am incredibly grateful for the commitment and support of our franchise partners and their teams for their dedication to helping Capriotti’s safely serve communities across the country.”

In February 2020, Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop introduced a plant-based steak sandwich to its menu.

The chain also partnered with Snake River Farms to launch a new range of American Wagyu beef subs at shops across the country.
