German online food delivery service Delivery Hero has launched a new tech hub in Istanbul, Turkey, adding to its international footprint of 15 hubs.

With this new Turkish tech centre, the company aims to further develop a digital ecosystem, driven by big data and technological capabilities, to expand its delivery capacity.

Delivery Hero CTO Christian Hardenberg said: “Innovation is the backbone of Delivery Hero’s growth journey, and we continue to develop proprietary technology worldwide.

“Our Yemeksepeti technology platform has been one of Turkey’s largest success stories, and we are excited to integrate it into our global platform.

“With the opening of the Delivery Hero tech hub in Istanbul, we will be able to accelerate our global innovation plans, tapping into a vibrant tech scene and large talent pool in Turkey.”

The new Turkish facility will join Delivery Hero’s existing tech hubs located in Berlin, Germany; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Seoul, South Korea; and Singapore.

To further bolster and diversify its tech talent pool, Delivery Hero intends to scale to more than 1,000 people at the tech centre, including engineering and product teams.

Delivery Hero said that its local operations will continue to run under its Yemeksepeti brand, an online food delivery firm in Turkey.

Yemeksepeti CEO Nevzat Aydin said: “With a strong track record of sharing best practices and expertise, the tech hub in Istanbul will allow us to further develop tech solutions that truly have a global impact.

“The new hub supports the Turkish economy and labour market through job creation and upskilling. This benefits the entire delivery ecosystem – from customers to riders to restaurant partners and vendors.”

In July, Delivery Hero launched its global Sustainable Packaging Program in an effort to reduce plastic waste and carbon emissions.

Under this programme, the firm plans to offer 100% plant-based and perfluoroalkoxy-alkanes free alternatives to plastic packaging to restaurants across the globe.
