Multinational food company Nestlé has announced its Buxton Natural Mineral Water bottles will be made from 100% recyclable plastic (rPET) and be 100% recyclable by 2021.

In November this year the company launched 75cl and 1 litre bottles made from 100% rPET, and the rest of its range, which is currently made from a minimum of 20% recycled plastic, will be 100% rPET by the end of 2021.

Currently, the rPET material used for the Buxton water bottles has to be sourced from outside the UK.  Nestlé is working with industry partners, non-governmental organisations and the government to support the UK-wide Deposit Return Scheme to improve the nation’s recycling rate to produce water bottles from materials in the UK.

Nestlé Waters UK business executive officer Michel Beneventi said: “We are incredibly excited to be able to put our commitments to sustainably into practice. The high-quality recycled material retains the same-all important properties as PET, resulting in a product that is lightweight, durable, resilient and still 100% recyclable.

“We would have liked to have made all our Buxton bottles from recycled material much sooner but there are many challenges to achieving this. The material we use need to be high-quality food grade.”

Nestlé UK and Ireland head of sustainability Anna Turrell said: “It is great that Buxton is taking this vital step. As a packaged goods company, we have a hugely important role to play in helping to address the amount of plastic produced in our industry and a collective responsibility to help shape a more sustainable future. We will continue to push the boundaries to address this challenge. We know more needs to be done and that we don’t have all the answers, but we are determined to get there.”
