US-based drive-in restaurant chain Sonic has expanded its menu with the launch of the Quarter Pound Double Stack Cheeseburger.

Featuring two beef burgers, cheddar cheese and cheese sauce, the new offering will be available for $2.99 for a limited time period.

Sonic’s product innovation and development vice-president Scott Uehlein said: “Sometimes a little something extra goes a long way, especially when it comes to a flavour profile that is extra savoury, juicy and melty.

“We took a classic cheeseburger and elevated what makes it great adding double the cheese in the middle, a second juicy patty and amped-up burger toppings to create a new Sonic experience that is truly irresistible.”

Earlier this year, Sonic added the Breakfast Slinger burger to its menu, which featured either egg and cheese, crispy bacon or sausage. The egg and cheese variant is made using melted cheese, eggs and a buttery brioche bun.

In September, multi-brand restaurant company Inspire Brands signed a definitive merger agreement to purchase Sonic for approximately $2.3bn.
