DoorDash has ceased the pilot of its voice-ordering product for restaurant clients in a move that comes just a year after the company enhanced the product’s team with talent from an AI startup, as reported by Bloomberg.

The termination follows a statement from customer Donatos Pizza, which is seeking a new vendor due to DoorDash’s decision to “sunset” its automated ordering features.

A DoorDash spokesperson confirmed to Bloomberg on Tuesday 20 May 2025 that the pilot concluded at the end of April. “We have a high bar for continued investment and remain guided by what customers and data tell us,” the spokesperson explained. “We scale or wind down initiatives based on many factors including product-market fit, customer demand and others.”

The voice-ordering product, launched in August 2023, was designed to assist restaurants in managing calls during busy periods, allowing staff to concentrate on in-store responsibilities. In March of the same year, DoorDash recruited senior team members from Standard AI, including its CEO and co-founders, to contribute to the product’s development.

Despite the discontinuation of the voice-ordering service, most former Standard AI employees remain with DoorDash. “We have developed proprietary technology and learnings from this pilot, and we’re excited to deploy it through a number of other customer use cases,” the spokesperson added, indicating a continued focus on AI-related projects.

To extend its service offerings, DoorDash has been diversifying from its primary delivery operations to include more enterprise services for restaurant operations. This strategic expansion was underscored by the company’s recent announcement that it is acquiring hospitality technology company SevenRooms Inc for $1.2bn. This acquisition is intended to provide software to restaurant groups and include a table-booking feature in the DoorDash app.
