Notably, the number of patent applications in the foodservice industry was 197 in Q2 2023, versus 246 in the prior quarter. Filings were down 46% year-on-year and decrease 19% quarter-on-quarter. This compares to a 46% year-on-year decrease in patent grants and 19% decline in quarter-on-quarter.
Most patenting activity has been in the BPM Solutions sector, where the number of patents filed Q1 2023 was 46, a drop of 29% versus the previous quarter. The second-largest patent count was in e-commerce (37, down 26%) and then IT Services in third (29, down 22%).
The top five companies accounted for 15% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that the largest number of patents filed over the last quarter was by Anheuser-Busch InBev with 7, followed by Starbucks with 6 and maxingvest with 6.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 53% share of total patent filings
The largest share of patent filings in the foodservice industry in Q2 2023 was in the US with 53%, followed by South Korea (8%) and China (8%). The share represented by the US was 7% higher than the 46% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
