Jack in the Box and Raised & Rooted have announced the launch of the Jack’s Unchicken and Jack’s Spicy Unchicken sandwiches at select restaurants in Monterey and Salinas, California, and Reno, Nevada, US.
Considered to be the first-ever plant-based chicken sandwiches launched by a quick-service restaurant chain, they will have taste, crunch and texture of a chicken sandwich.
Raised & Rooted is Tyson Foods’ alternative protein products brand. It launched its products in 2019. Its brand of fresh and frozen meat alternatives are sold at more than 10,000 retailer stores and online across the US.
The Unchicken sandwiches are made from pea protein isolate and have traditional crispy breading.
Available in two varieties of regular and spicy, the sandwiches will be available as a la carte and a combo option.
Jack in the Box chief product officer Jennifer Kennedy said: “Jack in the Box is delivering industry-leading innovation with the first plant-based chicken sandwich at retail in the US.
“We are excited to meet the growing demand for meatless alternatives with our new Unchicken sandwiches providing indulgent taste, crispy crunch, and savoury flavour in a new plant-based option.”
Raised & Rooted brand vice-president of marketing David Ervin said: “We believe this is the best tasting plant-based product in the market today. We are excited to be partnering with Jack in the Box to bring the delicious taste people have come to love from our plant-based nuggets and tenders to even more people with the Unchicken sandwiches.”
The plant-based sandwiches are available until 12 December or while supplies last.
