Online food delivery platform Swiggy has broadened the reach of its Food on Train service, now covering more than 115 railway stations across 28 states and union territories in India.

Swiggy Food Strategy, Customer Experience & New Initiatives vice-president Deepak Maloo highlighted in an announcement that the service liberates passengers from the constraints of pantry car offerings and the rush of buying food during short station stops.

Swiggy’s initiative is said to address the issues with train meal services, such as a lack of freshness, limited food variety, and hygiene concerns.

The service delivers local delicacies directly to passengers’ seats from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm, leveraging passenger name record (PNR)-based logistics to accommodate even brief train halts.

With the addition of 15 new stations, Swiggy ensures that a diverse group of travellers, including students, pilgrims and tourists, have access to food choices while travelling.

A growing trend observed by Swiggy is the “Order for Others” feature, which has seen nearly 14% of all Food on Train orders.

Lunchtime orders are particularly popular, with items such as sandwiches, vegetarian thalis (Indian meal plate), fruit plates, and rice bowls leading in demand.

Cities like Vijayawada, Warangal, Nellore, Salem, Thrissur, and Nagpur are said to be the contributors to this segment, accounting for almost one-fifth of such orders.

To order food on the train, travellers need to use the Swiggy app, select the Train option, input their PNR, and choose from a selection of trusted partner restaurants along their route.

Maloo said: “Passengers no longer have to rely only on pantry cars or hurried snack runs at stations for their meals on trains.

“With Food on Train, Swiggy brings fresh, quality meals right to their seats, whether it’s a scenic halt in Madgaon or a quick stop in Jodhpur. And with our ‘Order for Others’ trend, we are seeing how food is becoming a way for families and friends to share love during journeys, especially as the festive season sets in.”

Recently, Swiggy introduced DeskEats, a feature designed to cater to the meal needs of professionals in their workplaces.
