DoorDash launches SmartScale to reduce order errors in kitchens

The solution is smaller than a cutting board to suit busy kitchen environments.

DoorDash has unveiled SmartScale, a compact hardware system to support restaurants in enhancing order accuracy.

The device, created by DoorDash Labs, uses precise weighing technology combined with predictive modelling to check that prepared orders match the contents expected.

If the measured items differ from the prediction, the solution provides real‑time alerts so kitchen staff can correct errors before orders departs.

This process reduces the number of missing or inaccurate items, speeds handoff to users and ensure consumers receive what they are expecting.

Smaller than a cutting board, the unit is engineered to suit busy kitchen environments.

DoorDash Labs product head Harrison Shih stated: “By verifying every order before it leaves the counter, it reduces errors, saves staff time and gives merchants and consumers greater confidence in every delivery.

“It also makes the handoff more seamless for Dashers, providing a more reliable order-ready signal that improves on-time deliveries, and ensures happy customers.”

Accompanying the hardware, the achievements modal feature indicates each merchant’s SmartScale uptake and how their stores rank in utilisation.

An order manager add‑on lets staff monitor orders, contact customers, issue refunds for out‑of‑stock items and make substitutions from a single interface.

The system also signals when an order has been weighed and is set for pickup.

DoorDash stated that verifying order weight supports compatibility with emerging delivery methods such as drones and robots, including its Dot autonomous delivery robot.

Panera Bread is the first national partner deploying the solution for DoorDash third‑party orders, drive‑through and first‑party digital orders in the US.

Panera Bread chief digital officer Meenakshi Nagarajan stated: “The SmartScale is easy to use, takes up virtually no counter space, and is a simple tool that delivers unprecedented results.

“It allows us to focus on serving delicious food and delivering a great guest experience, while knowing that our orders are accurate before they go out the door.”

SmartScale is currently being rolled out with select restaurant partners, with wider availability planned.

In August 2025, DoorDash introduced multiple updates to its DoorDash for Business platform aimed at managing employee meal programmes.
