A wider rollout could follow by the end of this year or early next year, depending on how the trials perform.

“Flipkart is evaluating the food delivery market while trying to identify a differentiated positioning in the space,” one of the sources told the publication.

Around two years ago, Flipkart had outlined plans to enter food delivery via the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), similar to ride-hailing services Ola and payment app Paytm.

However, that initiative did not advance beyond the planning stage.

A second person said Flipkart is examining two possible routes: launching its own standalone food delivery platform or introducing a buyer-side application on ONDC.

Both options are under active review, and the company has started putting together a team for the project.

If finalised, Flipkart’s move would bring a new large competitor into a segment that has seen consolidation from more than a dozen operators to two major players, namely Zomato and Swiggy.

Urban mobility startup Rapido trialled its Ownly food delivery service in Bengaluru around August 2025. It completed its city-wide rollout earlier this month.
