US-based restaurant chain Dickey’s Barbecue Pit has entered the Mexican market with a multi-store development agreement.

The brand has partnered with local entrepreneur and owner/operator Jonathan Roasas Blanco for the deal.

Blanco said: “I’m very happy to bring Dickey’s Texas-style barbecue to one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico, Oaxaca de Juarez.

“I enjoy creating and experiencing things for the first time, and this introduction to Mexico for the 83-year-old American brand will be welcomed by the gastronomical capital of Mexico.

“Oaxaca is full of great food, customs, folklore and people who enjoy good food and drink. I’m passionate about this food, this brand, this region, and look forward to this partnership.”

The first store is expected to open later this year.

Dickey’s International Development executive vice-president Jim Perkins said: “Senor Blanco is full of life and understands how special Oaxaca is.

“It’s laced with cobblestone streets and colourful Mexican banderas [flags] and has a wonderful mixed population of locals and visitors. I look forward to working with Jonathan and the smell of late-night brisket in Mexico.”

Founded in 1941 by the Dickey family, Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurants has 550 locations across the US and eight other countries.

The expansion into Mexico follows Dickey’s recent deal in the UK and adds to its existing international locations in Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Japan, Pakistan, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.

In November 2023, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit announced that it would open a remodelled restaurant in Tyler, Texas.

The overhauled location was taken over by existing Dickey’s owner and operator Douglas Edwards and his pit crew.

It will offer its customers the brand’s pit-smoked barbecue.
