US-based on-demand local logistics platform DoorDash has launched Main Street Strong initiative to support restaurants in navigating the recovery phase of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Through the initiative, the company has introduced a suite of products, programmes, and policies to support restaurants in growing their business and taking control of the customer experience by developing their own digital ordering solutions that suit their requirements.

DoorDash Storefront service enables restaurants to build their online stores, providing a turnkey solution to offer their customers on-demand access to their restaurant without investing in in-house logistics.

According to DoorDash’s estimate, 40% of its restaurant partners do not have their own e-commerce platform. The tool will help customers to order takeout or delivery directly from the restaurant’s website or app, which plugs into DoorDash’s fulfilment network to complete the delivery. As a result of the service, restaurants can control the customer experience.

The system will become available in July and DoorDash will waive set-up, software and merchant delivery fees for local restaurants in 2020.

DoorDash Weblinks is a service for restaurants, which prefer DoorDash managing their digital ordering experience. Customers are redirected to DoorDash, which offers 0% commission to restaurants with five or fewer locations on all weblink orders, both for delivery and pickup, until the end of this year.

The company is launching Local Restaurant Saturday in June. It will offer customers $0 delivery fees on all orders from local restaurants to help them drive additional sales.

Furthermore, all DashPass subscribers would get 10% off on their pickup orders in June.

DoorDash co-founder and CEO Tony Xu said: “Our mission from day one has been to empower local businesses. The future of e-commerce for these merchants has been pulled forward during this pandemic and Main Street Strong embodies our commitment to offering local restaurants the tools and services they need to serve their customers in this accelerated transition.

“DoorDash Storefront takes products that we have built and extends them to create unique online storefronts for our restaurant partners, empowering local businesses to operate their own channels in this new digital future. With Main Street Strong, our goal is to help merchants to navigate a changing restaurant industry, drive sales to fuel growth, and eventually, welcome customers back to their stores how they choose.”
