Internet of Things (IoT) solution provider GND Solutions has incorporated Semtech’s LoRa devices with LoRaWAN protocol into new smart refrigeration solutions.

According to the company, the new solutions can assist restaurants in preventing food waste.

GND’s LoRaWAN-based wireless IoT solution, GLoSe-916T, is designed to monitor humidity and temperature. This offers real-time data to restaurant managers to enable them to maximise the shelf life of food.

Managers can also eliminate human error and closely observe food condition and safety by accessing the temperature data provided by the LoRa-enabled sensors of the application at customisable intervals.

Restaurant operators can deploy the sensors into refrigerator infrastructure, which can report temperatures between -40°C and 100°C. They are claimed to operate up to two years on a single battery charge.

GND Solutions founder and MD Siva Reddy said: “Accurately, efficiently and reliably monitoring food from refrigerator to table is one of the most prominent challenges in a restaurant setting.

“Utilising the advantages of Semtech’s LoRa devices for a simple deployment, GND installed a single gateway and 500 sensors in the Dubai restaurant.

“Restaurant managers were then able to leverage the IoT solution to monitor the temperature data of food in real time as it moves throughout the kitchen.”

Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group vice president of IoT Marc Pegulu said: “Semtech’s LoRa devices and the LoRaWAN protocol provide the ideal feature set for smart refrigeration applications, enabling consistent and accurate temperature monitoring.

“By leveraging LoRaWAN’s proven advantages, GND is able to accelerate a product to market that keeps refrigerator contents safe, preventing waste and reducing cost to the customer.”

A five-star restaurant in Dubai has already deployed the LoRa-based solutions into kitchens and refrigerators. It reported up to 40% reduction in its operational cost.
