M&As this week: Coca-Cola, Waitr, Sysco

Coca-Cola has completed the purchase of Costa Coffee from Whitbread for $4.9bn.

Coca-Cola has completed the purchase of Costa Coffee from Whitbread for $4.9bn.

Costa’s footprint in more than 30 countries will allow Coca-Cola to establish a strong coffee platform across Europe, the Asia Pacific (APAC), and the Middle East and Africa.

Coca-Cola will also benefit from various new coffee formats and channels, including the Costa Express vending system and new ready-to-drink (RTD) opportunities.

Costa Coffee operates 4,000 retail outlets with a coffee vending operation, at-home coffee formats and a roastery.

Waitr has acquired food delivery service Bite Squad for $323m.

The deal will enable Waitr to serve 86 markets in more than 500 cities and 22 states, while also strengthening its business.

Funding for the acquisition is provided by Luxor Capital Group, under a debt commitment letter.

Both the companies involved in the transaction are based in the US.

Sysco has entered a deal to acquire Waugh Foods.

Waugh Foods is involved in distributing quality food and drink to organisations in Illinois, while Sysco is a marketer and distributor of food products to restaurants, loges and healthcare and educational facilities.

Both companies are based in the US.

Innovative Foodservice Group (IFG) has acquired JES Restaurant Equipment.

Based in Greenwood, South Carolina, JES is involved in selling equipment, supplies and furniture to the foodservice industry.

The transaction will allow JES to expand its distribution capabilities and pursue additional add-on opportunities across the US.

Cornerstone Foodservice Group has acquired Astra Manufacturing, a manufacturer of espresso and cappuccino equipment, steamers, grinders and accessories for both the commercial and home segments.

Cornerstone Foodservice Group is a portfolio company of US-based equity firm ShoreView Industries.

The deal will allow Astra to launch its products in new markets through Cornerstone’s customer and distribution channels and contribute to its long-term growth.
