Canada-based full-service restaurant company Recipe Unlimited has committed to eliminate delivery and take-home plastic bags across its network.

The initiative will be implemented across Swiss Chalet, Harvey’s, East Side Mario’s, Kelseys and Montana’s restaurant brands of the company.

East Side Mario’s, Harvey’s and Burger’s Priest are currently offering paper bags as part of the initiative.

Recipe Unlimited CEO Frank Hennessey said: “We have a full-court press on reducing waste wherever we can, as quickly as we can. That means looking at every aspect of how we run our restaurants, including single-use items; energy, water and gas consumption, and food waste.

“Today’s announcement is part of our ongoing commitment to make positive contributions to the environment and life in Canada.”

Recipe plans to complete the phase out by December this year. The company is currently working with its franchisees, employees, suppliers, waste partners, industry, government and even competitors to implement the initiative.

“We can compete on a lot of things, but not on matters that are good for the environment. That we have to share.”

In addition, the restaurant company plans to eliminate styrofoam containers used for take-home leftovers across its network by the end of this year.

Hennessey added: “We believe we need to work with our industry to share information on how we can all improve. We can compete on a lot of things, but not on matters that are good for the environment. That we have to share.”

In June last year, the Canadian restaurant company announced its commitment to remove plastic straws across its portfolio of 19 eateries.

The decision is part of its proposal to reduce waste in all of its restaurants and covers brands such as Prime Pubs, Landing, Swiss Chalet, Harvey’s and East Side Mario’s.

Recipe Unlimited operates 1,382 restaurants globally under various restaurant brands including The Keg, Milestones, Montana’s, Kelsey’s, Bier Markt, Original Joe’s, State & Main, Elephant & Castle, The Burger’s Priest and The Pickle Barrel.’
