India-based restaurant industry software platform UrbanPiper has announced the acquisition of the US business segment of Ordermark, the online order management division of the virtual brand platform Nextbite.

This deal was announced in a Linkedin post by UrbanPiper CEO and co-founder Saurabh Gupta.

The Nation’s Restaurant News reported that, following the deal, UrbanPiper launched its products in the US and Canada, adding thousands of restaurants to its platform.

Publication RestaurantDive reported that the acquisition comes shortly after Nextbite announced a third wave of layoffs last month.

After the layoffs, some employees shared took to LinkedIn to say that Nextbite was either restructuring or closing down.

The layoffs in May come just after Nextbite announced agreements in April with restaurants, including Shawarmama, Killer Brownie and Nathan’s Famous. The agreement with Shawarmama was claimed to be Nextbite’s first international collaboration.

Nextbite CEO and Ordermark co-founder and former CEO Alex Canter said: “We’ve worked hard over the past six years to meet the needs of restaurants adapting to online ordering and changing consumer demands.

“Along the way, we’ve gotten to know the UrbanPiper team very well and we’re excited that they will be carrying the Ordermark brand forward, growing the platform and supporting customers in the US and beyond.”

In the LinkedIn post, UrbanPiper CEO and co-founder Saurabh Gupta also announced the launch of a new office in Culver City, Los Angeles.

Ordermark was launched in 2017 and offers a software solution for restaurants to manage their online orders, eliminating the need for various tablets from multiple online ordering companies.

In October 2020, Ordermark raised $120m through a Series C funding round. Nextbite and Ordermark combined their businesses shortly after the fundraising. In 2021, the combined entity was rebranded as Nextbite.
