US-based World Centric is set to debut a new plant-based, compostable pizza container, designed to deliver operational benefits for pizza takeout and delivery restaurants.

Known as PizzaRound, the 100% tree-free certified compostable pizza container has been made from renewable resources, 80% sugarcane and 20% bamboo, which helps restaurants in reducing their environmental impact.

World pizza champion Glenn Cybulski had approached World Centric to consult on the design aspect of the container and to test its performance.

Cybulski said: “The PizzaRound is the future of pizza boxes.

“Our focus for the past 14 years has been to help the foodservice industry reduce waste and improve its stewardship of the earth.”

“Takeout and delivery pizzas can now be hotter, crisper and free of the cardboard taste that often transfers to the pie in paper containers, reheated in the box they come in, and more sustainable and efficient for pizza restaurants at the same time. World Centric has reinvented everything except the pizza itself.”

When compared to traditional cardboard pizza boxes, the circular container eliminates the need for liners, tissue or plastic tents to keep the pizza crust crispier and saves labour and space. Customers can use the container for reheating the pizza in the oven as well as use it as a server and a dish.

Restaurateurs can custom imprint on the new container, which is currently available for 12-inch and 14-inch pizzas. The company said that a 16-inch size is expected to be added later this year.

The new PizzaRound box will debut at the International Pizza Expo, which will be held from 20 to 22 March in Las Vegas.

World Centric sales SVP Mark Stephany said: “Our focus for the past 14 years has been to help the foodservice industry reduce waste and improve its stewardship of the earth.

“Our new PizzaRound not only continues that initiative but also provides true functional innovations that make it possible to deliver a great quality pizza from the oven to the customer’s house.”
