Cracker Barrel to shut 14 Maple Street Biscuit Company sites

The brand had signalled a slowdown in expansion, trimming its target for new Maple Street units.

Cracker Barrel will close 14 Maple Street Biscuit Company locations in fiscal 2026, as reported by TheStreet.

Cracker Barrel acquired the fast-casual chain for $36m. in 2019.

Maple Street, established in 2012, specialises in Southern-style dishes such as biscuits and fried chicken, and presents a more contemporary interpretation of the country-themed setting associated with Cracker Barrel.

At the time of purchase, the chain operated 28 company-owned and five franchised outlets across seven US states. By August 2025, this number had risen to 68, though growth has since tapered off.

In Cracker Barrel’s fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, no new Maple Street outlets opened and two closed. In its latest earnings call, the parent company disclosed a $16.2m impairment charge related to Maple Street’s underperformance.

Cracker Barrel earlier signalled a slowdown in expansion, trimming its previous target for new Maple Street units — reducing an expected 9 to 11 openings by the end of fiscal 2024 to between 8 and 10.

The company faced strong public reaction to a proposed $700m transformation plan unveiled in August 2025.

The plan included remodelling stores, revising brand elements and modernising interior décor, with trials planned for between 25 and 30 locations in fiscal 2025 and a simplified logo that removed the longstanding figure seated beside a barrel.

Following widespread criticism on social media, Cracker Barrel announced that it would reinstate the original logo, pause the remodelling programme and revise its marketing, advertising and social media activities to better reflect its heritage.

Cracker Barrel CEO Julie Felss Masino stated in a recent earnings call: “The feedback we received from our guests in recent weeks on our brand refresh and store remodels has shown us just how deeply people care about Cracker Barrel.

“We thank our guests for sharing their voices and love for the brand and telling us when we've misstepped.”
