US-based restaurant franchise group KBP Brands has purchased 78 SONIC Drive-In restaurants across Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia, further scaling its presence in the quick-service sector.

The deal increases KBP’s Sonic holdings to 164 outlets in eight states and represents the company’s second acquisition of Sonic sites in under two years.

The latest transaction elevates KBP to the fourth-largest franchisee in the Sonic system.

The newly acquired restaurants were previously corporate-owned and run directly by Sonic, which is part of the Inspire Brands group.

KBP has an established relationship with Inspire Brands, having added Arby’s to its portfolio in 2021.

KBP Brands CEO Mike Kulp said: “We've had a successful five-year partnership with Inspire Brands and have seen strong results from our initial Sonic purchase.

“We look forward to expanding that with a larger footprint and additional operational efficiencies."

Reporting annual sales of $1.5bn, KBP has expanded steadily over the past 20 years. The company’s US operations now encompass more than 1,100 franchised restaurants under the KFC, Taco Bell, Arby’s and Sonic banners in 32 states.

Sonic has over 3,400 restaurants across 47 states in the US.

The deal adds around 1,600 employees to KBP’s workforce. Executive vice-president Mark Everett will remain in charge of KBP’s drive-in operations, working alongside chief operating officer Matt Hansen.

Sonic brand president John Kelly said: “Our relationship with KBP Brands continues to grow due to their operational excellence and our shared commitment to guest satisfaction and a culture that champions innovation.

“KBP's expansion with Sonic demonstrates their dedication to our vision and the brand's long-term growth.”
