Doughnut company Krispy Kreme has opened its Hot Light Theater Shop in Madrid, Spain - its first entry to the country - through a minority-interest-joint-venture with Glaseados Originales.

Two further Madrid outlets are due to open before the end of 2025.

The move is part of the company’s global expansion drive using a capital-light international franchise model.

Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth stated: “We’re thrilled to introduce Krispy Kreme’s iconic, fresh-made doughnuts to Spain.

“Partnering with Glaseados Originales not only strengthens our international presence with a highly experienced local operator but also reinforces our commitment to scaling efficiently through our franchise model that supports sustainable, profitable growth.”

The company intends to open 50 outlets in Spain by 2029, with five Hot Light Theater Shops in major cities serving as retail points and production hubs.

Barcelona and Valencia are already in the roll-out pipeline, with additional future locations identified in Málaga, Zaragoza and Bilbao.

Following its April 2025 opening in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, the doughnut company and joint-venture partner Ipiranga’s AmPM intend to open two further São Paulo locations before the end of 2025.

One site will offer the company’s new shop design and the other will be a smaller kiosk format positioned on a high-footfall street.

Both wil feature core menu items alongside local flavours such as dulce de leche and cinnamon sugar, prepared daily.

Krispy Kreme will enter Uzbekistan in October 2025 with a first store in Tashkent under a franchise agreement with Food Town Logistics-Group.

The franchisee has signalled plans for rapid expansion in the country, targeting 70 shops by 2030.

Charlesworth stated: “As we grow our international presence, we’re focused on sharing the joy that is Krispy Kreme with more people, in more places. From Spain to Brazil to Uzbekistan, we love seeing the excitement from fans around the world as they enjoy our fresh, delicious treats.”

In May, Berjaya Food International (BFI), a Berjaya Food subsidiary, unveiled a collaboration with BlueMon Group to bring Krispy Kreme to Mongolia.
