Marston’s to power 120 pubs in UK with solar energy

The move is in line with the pub company’s targets for achieving net zero by 2040.

British pub chain Marston’s announced that it will utilise renewable energy to power 120 of its establishments.

Employing around 10,000 individuals across a network of more than 1,300 pubs, bars and inns, Marston’s has teamed up with Two Blues Solar and Nuvolt for this solar energy venture.

Under the partnership, solar panels will be installed on the rooftops of the selected pubs within the next 12 months.

Marston's Investment director Andy Kershaw said: “As the UK’s leading local pub company, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment, as we work towards a greener future for our guests, our people and the communities we serve.

“Through this partnership, we can now significantly accelerate the rollout of solar across our community-based pub estate without diverting capital from our core operations, helping our pubs make the transition to renewable energy while reducing our total emissions and reliance on fossil fuels.”

The move is part of a wider commitment to sustainability and is in line with the pub company’s targets for achieving Net Zero by 2040.

The £5.4m ($7.1m) investment is entirely financed by Atrato Onsite Energy through a power purchase agreement.

This long-term arrangement allows Marston’s to acquire 100% of the renewable energy produced on its rooftops without owning the solar infrastructure.

Each solar installation is anticipated to generate roughly 30,000kWh of electricity each year, fulfilling about 15-20% of the energy requirements for each pub.

The initiative began in January this year, with the first phase expected to be completed by early 2026.

Marston’s has been central to the British beer and pub sector for almost two centuries.

It runs a variety of local pub formats across the entirety of the UK.

In September of 2024, Admiral Taverns, a community pub organisation in the UK, reached an agreement to purchase 18 freehold pubs from Marston’s.

This transaction aligns with Admiral’s strategy for profitable expansion.
