US-based fast-casual restaurant brand Smashburger has launched a new restaurant at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California, serving military personnel and their families.

The opening is part of Smashburger's growth strategy, with plans to add between 12 and 15 new locations by the summer of 2026, including sites in Charlotte and Salt Lake City.

The company is focusing on adaptability and expansion into non-traditional venues.

Baximus CEO Phil Thomas stated: “We're excited to welcome Smashburger and the bold flavours it brings to the Naval Air Station North Island community.

“Smashburger is the perfect partner for this location, not only for its culinary appeal, but for its adaptability and deep expertise in non-traditional venues.

“The company's commitment to outstanding taste, value and variety makes them a natural fit for our community and a meaningful addition to the base."

The new restaurant will offer a breakfast menu along with its signature Certified Angus Beef burgers and hand-crafted chicken sandwiches, including options such as the Classic Smash, the All-American Smash, the Bacon Stack Smash and the Crispy Chicken Sandwich.

Additional menu items will include Chicken Tenders, Smash Tots and fresh-brewed coffee, providing quick meals or convenient options for those working shifts.

Smashburger CEO Jim Sullivan stated: “We are honoured to open the doors to our location at Naval Air Station North Island and give back to a community that embodies dedication, resilience and unity.

“We look forward to providing a space where service members, staff and their families can relax, connect and enjoy our great food and exceptional service.

“Our continued success in non-traditional locations, such as airports and military bases, demonstrates the strength of our brand, our commitment to meeting guests where they are, and the strong demand we are seeing for our taste, variety, and value.”

In July 2025, Smashburger opened a new outlet at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).
