US-based hot dog chain Wienerschnitzel has launched its first restaurant on a US military base, as part of its push into non-traditional franchise locations.

The new outlet is in the Navy Exchange food court at 2260 Callagan Highway, building 3187A, in San Diego, California, under a contract with Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM).

According to Wienerschnitzel, the opening will help introducing the brand to Navy Exchange authorised patrons, including service members, civilian employees and their families.

The restaurant will offer the restaurant chain’s full menu, including chili cheese dog, junkyard dog, chili cheese fries, jalapeño poppers, burgers and soft beverages.

The launch follows several recent Wienerschnitzel openings inside Walmart stores and is positioned as part of the company’s wider expansion across military, retail, travel and other convenience-focused venues.

Wienerschnitzel chief development officer David Winter said: “Opening our first restaurant on a military base is an exciting milestone for our brand and another example of how Wienerschnitzel can thrive beyond the traditional restaurant model.

“Whether it's a Walmart, travel centre, or military installation, we're finding new ways to meet consumers where they already are while creating additional growth opportunities for current and future franchise partners.”

Wienerschnitzel operates 340 franchised restaurants across 13 states and has more than 30 additional units in development nationwide.

Earlier this year, Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers opened its first-ever restaurant on a US military base.

Located inside the commissary at the Fort Lee Army installation, the site includes a streamlined kitchen and a simplified menu designed for the limited space.
