Celebrating International Sushi Day: Exploring the Global

International Sushi Day falls on 18 June. It was launched in 2009 to encourage consumers and food manufacturers around the world to try and enjoy sushi recipes. The original type of sushi was developed as a fish preservation method in Southeast Asia where it then spread to southern China before reaching Japan where it has gone on to become the sophisticated range of dishes enjoyed today.

To mark the day, Verdict Foodservice looks at how restaurants around the globe are celebrating International Sushi Day with great-tasting sushi.

United Arab Emirates

Sushi lovers can celebrate International Sushi Day at Sumo Sushi & Bento restaurants across the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Between 11am and 11pm customers will be given a free portion of Crunchy Crazy sushi rolls, which is one of the most popular dishes on the menu when they order any other dish. It includes prawn tempura and cucumber rolled together with sweet chilli sauce and homemade teriyaki sauce

The special treat is available for dine-in, delivery and takeaway on the Sumo app or via a toll-free number.

South Africa

To celebrate International Sushi Day, Cape Town Fish Market is giving customers 50% of all sushi is on the menu.

The restaurant combines South African and Japanese cuisine from fish and chips to classic sashimi as well as sushi platters made fresh in the restaurant.

US

Lovers of sushi in the US can celebrate at one of the top ten sushi restaurants in Miami, 26 Sushi & Tapas.

The restaurant will offer customers buy-one-get-one-free on a speciality maki. Options including the Karate Kid made from tuna, avocado, scallions, top salmon, masago and aji Amarillo, and the Vegan Machine with tofu tempura, cucumber, carrots, sweet shitake and avocado, and the OMG roll made from tuna, avocado, jalapeno, crispy shallots with Hamachi and tataki on top.

Maldives

Oishii – the House of Sushi in Maldives is giving customers a reason to celebrate International Sushi Day with a complimentary chef’s special roll when a customer buys any two signature rolls.

It has also launched a limited edition roll in its signature Temari sushi, which includes teriyaki marinated minced chicken, covered in sushi rice, topped with cheddar and crispy nori.

The special offer is available this week from 18 June to 25 June.

United Kingdom

To celebrate International Sushi Day UK customers can visit the Roadster Café at its two locations in Marylebone and Piccadilly in London.

Customers can enjoy sushi at the Japanese fusion restaurant with 20% off orders from its sushi menu today. Options include nigiri, gunkan, sashimi, hosomaki, uramaki, fotomaki and jemaki.
