Understand the impact of the Ukraine conflict from a cross-sector perspective with the GlobalData Executive Briefing: Ukraine Conflict

American fast-food chain McDonald’s is planning to re-open its restaurants in Ukraine over the next few months.

The restaurant company temporarily shut its operations in the country after the Russian invasion but intends to open its stores in Kyiv and areas of western Ukraine that are deemed to be safe.

McDonald’s international operated markets head Paul Pomroy said: “As we look forward, supporting our people in Ukraine continues to be our number one priority.

“We’ve spoken extensively to our employees who have expressed a strong desire to return to work and see our restaurants in Ukraine reopen, where it is safe and responsible to do so. In recent months, the belief that this would support a small but important sense of normalcy has grown stronger.

“And Ukrainian officials have advised that businesses resuming operations will support the local economy and the Ukrainian people.”

Prior to the temporary pause in operations, McDonald’s is said to have operated 109 restaurants in Ukraine.

The company did not specify how many restaurants it plans to re-open in the country but confirmed that the reopenings will be carried out in a phased manner.

The restaurant chain added that it is working with its suppliers to ensure the availability of products at the restaurants.

It is also continuing talks with employees to bring them back on site with enhanced safety protocols.

McDonald’s also temporarily shut its business in Russia in response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The company later exited the Russian market by selling its Russian business to previous licensee Alexander Govor.
