UK-based pizza chain Pizza Pilgrims has revealed plans to expand into Scotland and Wales following a substantial increase in revenue.

The chain, which has 22 pizzerias in England, is poised to open four new outlets: two in London in June and August 2024, one in Cardiff in August and one in Edinburgh by December.

From a modest start with a single pizza van in 2012, founders and brothers Thom and James Elliott have developed Pizza Pilgrims into a multimillion-pound enterprise.

The chain now employs 480 staff and delivers 50,000 pizzas weekly.

The company recently reported a 37% jump in revenue to £28.7m while pre-tax profit surged from £300,000 to £700,000.

The company’s success is also reflected in its best-selling items, with the Margherita, the double pepperoni and the hot honey pizza leading sales.

Beyond London, Pizza Pilgrims has locations in Leeds, Brighton, Nottingham and Cambridge.

Thom Elliot said: “This year will see four new openings, including our inaugural pizzerias in Scotland and Wales, as we continue to demonstrate that sustainable growth remains an output of running a great business, rather than our sole focus.

“We continue to love the journey and look forward to bringing our team’s legendary Neapolitan hospitality to our growing band of pilgrims in new cities up and down the land.”

Innovative strategies such as the “Pizza In The Post” initiative during the Covid-19 pandemic and a partnership with Ocado for pizza-at-home kits have contributed to the brand’s diversification, now representing 19% of its income.

In May 2023, Pizza Pilgrims launched a pizzeria in Queen’s Park, London and a new deli concept offering Italian produce and dry items.
