UK-based foodservice company SSP Group has announced the acquisition of ECG Ventures, which operates restaurants in Canadian airports.

SSP Group will take over three units at Calgary Airport and two at Edmonton Airport.

The five restaurants and bars that will complement SSP’s existing business at both airports include The Kitchen by Wolfgang Puck, Bistro on the Bow, the Belgian Beer Café (two units) and Canadian Brewhouse.

The acquisition of ECG follows SSP’s recent acquisition of the Midfield Concession Enterprise (MCE) in North America.

Established in 2002, MCE focuses on bringing local restaurants that reflect each region’s culinary landscape to airports.

SSP has also signed a new contract with Jeddah Airport to operate three food and beverage packages, representing a total of 26 units.

The foodservice company will initially operate these units for between five and seven years.

SSP plans to launch international and local proprietary and franchise brands at Jeddah airport.

The brands it plans to launch include Jamie Oliver’s Kitchen, Pizza Express and the London-based gelato specialists Snowflake and Crêpeaffaire.

It also plans to bring in Jeddah-based Social Kitchen and Social Bakery, regional favourite Cafe Bateel and the bespoke Falafel & Friends.

SSP also plans to introduce its travel brands including Jaipur (Indian street food), Soul + Grain, Negroni, Ritazza and the Camden Food Co.

SSP Group CEO Patrick Coveney stated: “Both the acquisition of ECG in Canada and the significant contract win at Jeddah are excellent examples of our business development strategy in action.

“We are clear that a combination of investing in organic growth and carrying out selective infill mergers and acquisitions will create sustainable long-term value and returns, and North America and the Middle East are important areas of focus for expansion.

“We very much look forward to welcoming the ECG team to SSP and to delighting passengers at Jeddah with our carefully selected mix of brands and concepts.”
