Food delivery platform Uber Eats has launched new contactless order feature to enable safe dine-in and take out options at restaurants in the US amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The new function is called Uber Eats Contactless Order Feature and enables users to pay the bill for a dine-in or pick-up order using Uber Eats app.

The new feature is expected to enhance the safety of the users by eliminating the need for them to touch surfaces.

The latest move comes at a time when restaurants across the country begin to open up their places for dining even as Covid-19 cases continue to rise.

Uber Eats product head Daniel Danker said: “We all have a role to play in keeping each other safe and healthy, and our Contactless Order Feature for both pick-up and dine-in provides another tool for customers and restaurant staff to do just that.”

Initially, the dine-in payment feature will be launched by the company in eight markets with a plan to include more cities as Covid-19 rates drop.

These markets include Indianapolis, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Vermont, Atlanta, New York City and Washington DC, while the pick-up feature is available nationwide.

Previously, the company added an in-app donate button that enables customers to contribute to the restaurants affected by the pandemic.

In May, the company announced that it will cease operations in smaller markets such as Ukraine, Czech Republic, Romania, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Honduras and Uruguay by 4 June.

In June, Uber Eats launched in Stanley, UK.
