Alphabet’s drone subsidiary Wing is preparing to launch its residential drone delivery service across the San Francisco Bay Area in the coming months.

The company described the US region as a “particularly meaningful market”, since Wing was founded in the Bay Area in 2012 as a project within Google’s X, the Moonshot Factory.

Wing is aiming to improve traditional last-mile delivery by developing drones designed to safely transport lightweight packages such as meals, groceries and small household items directly to homes in dense residential areas.

The company added it has safely completed more than 750,000 home deliveries, serving more than two million customers across several large US metro areas, including Houston, Atlanta and Dallas.

According to a Reuters report, it has partnered with DoorDash to provide deliveries from major restaurant chains, including Wendy’s and Panera. The company also flies orders for Walmart.

In a statement, Wing said: “Wing has created an entirely new logistics infrastructure focused on transporting small orders directly to consumers.

“With lightweight, highly automated drones, Wing takes the hassle out of small deliveries, so customers can get their last-minute ingredients, small household items, and meals without sitting in traffic.”

Wing expanded its partnership with DoorDash to the US in 2024 following a year-long pilot in Australia. The pilot programme began in Christiansburg, Virginia, and later expanded to other US cities.

The company also launched a pilot project with Serve Robotics in October 2024, in which Serve’s ground robots collected food from restaurants and handed it off to Wing drones for aerial delivery.

Introducing operations in the Bay Area is being framed by Wing as a further step towards its goal of building a wider logistics network based on drone technology.
