On The Border shuts company-owned restaurants in US

The decision was taken by the restaurant brand after a prolonged restructuring process.

Tex-Mex chain On The Border closed all its company-operated restaurants in the US on 12 June 2026.

On its website, On The Border posted a notice saying: “After many years of serving our communities, On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has closed its company-owned restaurant locations.”

“This was an incredibly tough decision. We are deeply grateful to the guests and team members who supported On the Border for so many years. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.”

The move follows a prolonged restructuring process.

The brand sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2025 and was subsequently acquired by Pappas Restaurants.

Since the purchase, the chain has steadily reduced its footprint.

It once operated 60 outlets, but business magazine Fast Company reported the Tex-Mex brand listed 33 locations last week.

In a statement to Fast Company, the brand's corporate operator OTB Hospitality said: “On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has made the difficult decision to move forward with a significant transition in its restaurant operations, which will include the closing of company-owned locations by the end of Friday 12 June 2026.”

The operator added that its "immediate focus is on supporting our team members through this transition and ensuring an orderly and respectful closure," though it did not specify what support will be provided to employees.

OTB Hospitality said that independently run franchise sites, including locations in South Dakota, Florida, Nevada, California and South Korea, will stay open.
