Foodservice distributor Gordon Food Service has marked the start of construction on a distribution centre in Ajax, Ontario, with a ‘ground-breaking’ service held earlier this week.
Located in a 330,000ft2 of space, the Ajax distribution centre is the largest for the company in the country and will allow it to deliver up to 60,000 packages per day.
Gordon Food Service Canada president Dean Noble said: “We’re very excited about growing in the greater Toronto area and our overall business in Ontario.
“We began doing business in this area in the early 1990’s, and while our business has now expanded coast-to-coast in Canada, Ontario will always be a big part of our company history.
“We also know there are very talented people here, who we hope will join us in our efforts when the new distribution centre opens next year.”
The company has roped in Canada-based construction company Maple Reinders to build the new centre. Construction activities will continue throughout the summer.
Gordon has plans to begin foundation work in mid-September as well as automation in May next year, with a full automation of the site scheduled for early 2020.
Maple Reinders Group president and CEO Harold Reinders said: “Our relationship with Gordon Food Service goes back more than ten years as we’ve helped them further strengthen their presence in Canada with distribution centres out west in Alberta as well as Ontario.
“We’re excited to deliver this new modern warehouse for them in the town of Ajax and look forward to continuing our successful partnership for years to come.”
