The University of Guelph in Canada has partnered with Gastronomous Technologies to introduce advanced kitchen automation in its campus dining operations.

As part of the collaboration, the university has installed Gastronomous’s autonomous charbroiler, the ChronoGrill, within its foodservice operations.

Described as purpose-built for high-volume environments, the ChronoGrill uses AI, advanced vision systems and industrial-grade automation to deliver consistent, flame-grilled products.

The system uses Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology to deliver live operating data to GastroVerse, Gastronomous's remote monitoring platform.

The setup allows operators to track performance continuously and receive operational insights. It also enables 24-hour off-site support to help maintain uptime in busy foodservice kitchens.

Gastronomous Technologies CEO Kevork Sevadjian said: “The University of Guelph is a forward-thinking institution with deep expertise in food systems and hospitality.

“Working together has demonstrated how autonomous cooking technology can be successfully integrated into campus dining, delivering measurable operational benefits while enhancing the quality and integrity of the food.”

The collaboration aligns with the university’s ongoing investments in technologies that support its “commitment to innovation, sustainability, and student experience”.

University of Guelph ancillary associate VP Ed Townsley said: “Our goal is to continuously improve the quality, consistency, and sustainability of the dining experience we offer our campus community.

“The ChronoGrill represents a thoughtful application of automation that supports our teams, maintains high food quality standards, and aligns with our broader operational and sustainability objectives.”

Campus dining operations at the university are managed by Hospitality Services, which offers meals across multiple locations for the university community.
