Online delivery service Deliveroo has partnered with clean technology (cleantech) company OXWASH to trial a takeaway container cleaning service for customers and restaurants in Oxford and Cambridge this summer.

The trial starts in August and will allow customers to ask for their containers to be picked up by Deliveroo workers so that restaurants involved in the trial can wash and reuse the containers for future use.

The trial will enable the two companies to decide what the most efficient and easiest customer experience is, and if it is successful the service will be extended to more cities in the UK in 2020.

Customers will be able to arrange the pickup or drop off of their used containers by scanning a QR code that will be labelled on Deliveroo packaging.

This trial comes after Deliveroo created an opt-in button on its app for plastic cutlery, resulting in a 90% drop of customers using plastic cutlery across the globe. The company also launched its own packaging store providing recyclable and biodegradable packaging for restaurant partners around the world.

Deliveroo UK managing director Dan Warne said: “Food delivery is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and at Deliveroo we’re proud to be the innovator, giving customers amazing food, restaurants extra business and riders well-paid work. We’re also proud to able to extend our innovation to help reduce the usage of plastics and promote recycling to our customers.”

OXWASH founder Kyle Grant said: “We’re proud to be working with the world leaders in food to bring this innovative new model to the market in the battle against single use plastic waste. I’m confident that the integration of our operation with Deliveroo’s outstanding commitment to sustainability will make a rapid change to the amount of plastic waste entering the planet’s ecosystems.”

This new programme is the latest in a line of environmental schemes by Deliveroo. Last year the company helped recycle over five tonnes of rubbish found on UK beaches through its clean-up in initiative.
